consensus on grade of the Groove SS, Glendalough
« on: April 03, 2012, 12:13:28 PM »
yo,

i havent done this (yet!) but i have heard 7A+ mooted, which doesnt sound far fetched to me, especially with the low right foot hold which has become(!) quite good. A fair few folks have now done it so what are these people's thoughts on the grade? i am trying to knock together a little glendo vid between nappy changes (no, not mine) and want to get the grade right.

cheers,
Chris

Hey Mr Rooney,

Having been on it both ways, I'd suggest for the new beta - 7a+/low-end 7b.  The previous method was far harder and probably justified the grade given in the guide - 7c I think.

I'd go for 7b. But I'm a grade whore.

when did you do it? the move to the crimp is very easy now, the foothold was a tiny edge in january but is now very positive

Haven't done it. Dropped it from the slot crimp thing. I was finding the hardest move to be sticking that sidepull sloper thing with the right hand. Only got through it once. 7A+ would be in the realms of possibility I guess, but it feels very hard to me.

how dare you try to quantify something as abstract as a boulder problem with a number!

This problem has been designated a grade in the guide, no discussion here please... see previous thread for details, if you want to talk of grades, go trad climbing!

I know you are taking the piss Chris but it might make more sense to say:

how dare you try to quantify something as abstract as difficulty with a number!

Barry.

Yes I assigned this problem a grade in the guide. Do you have a issue with that?

Maybe I have some strange ideas about grades and maybe they are nonsense but I have never tried to stifle discussion about them in fact I went to the trouble of establishing this forum in response to requests from you and others.
