Bouldering Discussion / Re: Intro!

If you have access to a car from Naas you are about half an hour from your nearest Wicklow bouldering around the Wicklow Gap, or maybe 45 minutes from Glendalough which is probably a better bet if you are just starting out, you are more likely to meet other boulderers there also.

Bouldering Discussion / Re: Bouldering meet 1/2/3th March CANCELLED

Not surprised but a real pity all the same. I wonder is it boulderers as opposed to climbers, real climbing meets often seem to attract a decent crowd, and I feel like I've been to a few "mixed" meets and been in a small minority of boulderers.

The problem in Mall Hill between the very first boulder (Knife Fork Spoon) and the track, with the small tree stump underneath? I don't have a guide to hand.

Bouldering Discussion / A Guide as an App
« on: May 30, 2012, 04:19:48 PM »
Didn't want the other thread to digress but I'm curious as to how people might see an app being used as a guide in the future. I think there'll definitely be a market, its the logical step if guides start moving even in part to handheld devices.

It'll keep a ticklist for you.
Direct you around circuits like a GPS, where necessary invents its own based on a grade range,  climbing preferences etc.
Links to videos of problem being done, allows you to upload same.
Shows grades according to consensus (bleau.info style) and change accordingly with more traffic, hold breakages, increased polish etc. Link you directly to discussions/faqs about specific problems, is this hold in etc. Basically wiki-bouldering.
Recommend problems to you based on problems you've done/liked.
Allow searches of problem types that suit you, aretes, slopers etc
Recommend specific venues based on the upcoming weather.

This is a vision of the future. (This vision assumes blanket 3G coverage)

do I hear the patter of an irish bouldering app?

In terms of Marie Rose being a total sandbag, spits off the best of folks, I'd suggest Tombstone arete as its twin. Obviously Tombstone doesn't have the history though, so maybe Lowe's problem on the Egg boulder?

I think JH could grow to love the name Jizzle.

Sorry Steve, I was merely giving credit where it was due, I don't think of it in those terms.

Facebook works as a platform for everything going on in irish climbing to all come together in one stream along with all the other social crap in your life. With regards bouldering it's generally just links to events, blog articles and videos, all of which you will already have linked to on your blog (or upcoming blog roll) or site anyway.

Where you might be losing out is the easy casual commentary that goes on (also the easy uploading of images). Personally I'm principally seeing this on Steve's Irish climbers facebook group which would be both boulderers and climbers but it also goes on between climber Friends on facebook. Hopefully the new forum will enable a similar level of casual commentary to flourish on theshortspan. To that end ukb's video and pic threads are probably pretty effective.

Probably obvious but I reckon at this stage the guide doesn't need to have such a dominant a position on the page.
