Hi all,
Assuming that this is a general thread and open to VS visitors, non- protoganist/developers and invisible people, I'd like to state my view on things on here(once only)too please.
Firstly speaking generally I agree with chris and ped. I think the adventurous thing is a bit of a non-argument, as to me bouldering is about the moves and if you want adventure you can get that doing trad, soloing or just leave the mats at home.
Also, generally speaking I think its fine to level out landings provided:
1 It doesn't detrimentally alter the asthetics of an area.
2 Its done naturally i.e. using rock etc. thats indigionous to the area.
3 If artificial apparatus (i.e. pallets, mats, bouncy castles etc.) is used, it's not permanent or left out in plain view.
4 It doesn't cause aggro with other climbers, landowners or other non climbers in the area.
Every situation is different though so now a few points related to the protagonist/developer thread:
Specifically at Murlough bay, where I have imagined that I've bouldered on many occaisions, often you meet the farmer, walkers, tourists etc. on the way in/out to the boulders. Naturally when they see the mats, they want to know what you are doing. So far people are polite/friendly and interested when you explain what your doing there. I suspect that might change if, as Ricky Y, Angela etc. have suggested, the pallets are visible from the road and fishing/tourist areas.
It was also implied that this may cause aggro with the national trust. If so this would not be good for boulderers there. From, what I've seen at the ozone and the head, theres a lot of strong youths coming from the greater belfast direction, who'll rip the place up in the near future and they deserve their chance.
That said, I don't think the "palletors" in this occasion should be criticised, from what I know of this, especially as no chipping evidence has since appeared. They did what they felt was the way forward but then respected the view of some highly respected fairhead regulars and others and removed the pallets which must have been a real bastard!!
I hope reputations remain untarnished, theres no bad feelings anywhere and the good vibes that way continue.
Rodney.
