Pierre the structures that councils build are to protect the enviroment from further damage. There is a strong argument that the visual 'damage' they cause is offset by the erosion they prevent.

Building structures to make bouldering safer is completely different. The former can't be used to justify the latter.

Are you speaking in general or refering to building platforms? Cause the best way to protect the environment is to not build platforms.

I definitely think a lot of this platform building has been inspired directly or indirectly from the mountain biking culture of building stuff in the woods aka north shore.
