First of all, I'm really glad that Richie Betts and his mate were at the Ship boulder in Torridon the day I went there with Felix Davey. The Ship boulder has some really awesome lines, but it's quite a different size from those you get in Glendo. Although John Watson's guidebook mentions that the boulder is sinking in a pond, I do not happen to possess my own pallet (pads already take space in the car) and I could really have had to go back home empty handed if it was not for those guys. They climb there quite often, see, so they keep pallets hidden around. Can you see where I'm coming from? (locals VS visitors debate...)

Now I know what you're going to say: it's a different thing having pallets around and hidden than to have an actual structure build and very visible. Yes. But do not we keep hearing that path erosion is bad, that the bogs get damaged by walkers, etc. And what the councils do to relieve the pressure, they build timber footpaths... I've seen lots of these structure in Clare, in Donegal and in the Pentlands (here, near Edinburgh). I don't find them ugly, and I think it's quite clever as it protect the bog from the walker, and the walker from the bog.

Can we not have similar structures to protect climbers from the boulders and boulders from the climbers? It may sound idiotic but doing things properly is sometimes the best way to protect the environment. And this also means more communication between climbers, including discussing ethics, which hopefully could reduce the risk of lines being damaged.
